Welcome to Food Is Fusion!
My Name is Rei Yamazaki, and I currently live in Tokyo. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, to a Japanese mother and an American father.
I was fortunate to grow up in Hawaiʻi and be exposed to the melting pot of cultures from an early age. I remember going to school, potlucks, restaurants, and learning so much about my friends and neighbors through their food.
I quickly learned that food was something much bigger than just fuel. It was a historical account of people’s lineage, culture, struggles, and triumphs. Food was the key to connection!
I soon became obsessed with food and learning as much as I could about it. Throughout my life, I have lived in China, Hawaiʻi, Miami, Madrid, and Tokyo. The common theme throughout these different phases of my life has been breaking bread with others and opening myself up to new thoughts and experiences through gastronomy.
As I always like to say, there is no such thing as weird food, just something you may not be familiar with yet.
In a world that can sometimes feel bleak, I feel like food is the thing that connects us all. Food is a gateway to understanding more about others, and I am on a mission to show people that we are more similar than we are different.
